Planning advice

Christmas Tree Shopping, Without the Guesswork

Farm or lot, cut-your-own or pre-cut—how to pick the right tree stop for your household.

Decide what the trip is for

If the tree is the errand, a nearby lot with clear hours may be all you need. If the choosing is the tradition, a farm visit can be the outing itself. Check what each venue actually offers—cut-your-own, pre-cut trees or both—before promising anyone a particular experience.

Measure before you leave home

Know your ceiling height and the space the tree will stand in. A tree that looks modest in a field can be enormous in a living room. Bring a tape measure and your stand’s size, and ask the venue about netting, wrapping and help loading.

Ask about freshness and care

For pre-cut trees, ask when stock arrives and how it is kept. For cut-your-own, ask which varieties are available that day and whether saws are provided. At home, a fresh cut and regular watering matter more than any additive.

Plan the practicalities

Check payment methods, whether the venue can help secure the tree to your car, and what the queue looks like at peak times. Weekend afternoons are busiest almost everywhere; a weekday evening visit is often calmer.

Before you go

Is a tree farm cheaper than a tree lot?

Not necessarily. Compare the price of the tree itself, any entry or activity charges, and the drive. Prices vary by variety and size at both.

Do all farms let you cut your own tree?

No. Some sell only pre-cut trees, and some offer cut-your-own only on certain days or in certain fields. Confirm before you go.

How do I keep a cut tree fresh?

Make a fresh cut at the base before standing it in water, keep the stand topped up, and keep the tree away from heat sources.

When is the best time to buy?

Earlier in the season means the best selection. If you buy early, freshness care matters more; if you buy late, call ahead to check remaining stock.
